Fairmount Water Works

The mission of the Fairmount Water Works FWW is to cultivate stewardship of our common water assets by empowering educated choices about the utilization of land and water. We instruct residents about Philadelphia's urban watershed – its past, present, and future – and team up with accomplices to ingrain a thankfulness for the associations between day to day life and the normal environment.Situated on the east bank of the Schuylkill River between notable Boat House Row and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Fairmount Water Works opened its entryways in 1815 as the sole water drawing station for the City of Philadelphia.

The Fairmount Water Works is a National Historic Landmark, a Civil Engineering Landmark, and a National Mechanical Engineering Landmark, and was composed and developed to give protected, clean drinking water to a city on the cusp of noteworthy growth.Very nearly a century later, in 1909, the Water Works was decommissioned as a pumping station when the City moved to sand filtration for sanitization in light of modern improvement and the subsequent inconvenient effect on the district's water quality.
