The William Morris Gallery, opened via Prime Minister Clement Richard Attlee in 1950, is the best public museum devoted to English Arts and Crafts fashion designer and early socialist William Morris. The gallery is located at Walthamstow in Morris's family home from 1848 to 1856, the previous Water House, a large Grade II indexed Georgian dwelling of about 1750 which is set in its own sizable grounds. The gallery underwent principal redevelopment and reopened in August 2012; in 2013 it won the countrywide prize for Museum of the Year.
In 2007, the museum confronted a closure hazard after its opening hours were cut returned as a price-reducing workout, breaking a stipulation of gifts by means of Sir Frank Brangwyn, that works must be on view for a minimal amount of time weekly.
