About Totnes Castle

Totnes Castle is outstanding amongst other protected models of a Norman motte and bailey stronghold in England. It is arranged in the town of Totnes on the River Dart in Devon. The surviving stone keep and window ornament divider date from around the fourteenth century. From after the Norman Conquest of 1066 it was the caput of the Feudal barony of Totnes. The manor involves a telling position on a substantial slope over the town, and gatekeepers the way to deal with three valleys. The main chateau on this site is accepted to have been worked by the Breton Juhel of Totnes otherwise called Judhael who was one of William the Conqueror's lieutenants.
The primitive barony of Totnes was allowed to him in 1068, and with the end goal to bond his authority over the territory he developed a fortress and established Totnes Priory inside the town. This first development likely comprised of a wooden palisade and tower. On the passing of King William I, Juhel lost his territories, conceivably because of his help for the Rebellion of 1088. The primitive barony of Totnes was at that point conceded to Roger de Nonant, whose relatives seem to have held it for the following three ages. Following this it came into the ownership of William de Braose, third Lord of Bramber, who is likely in charge of building the principal stone shell keep and dividers on the site.
