About Eglinton Castle

The antiquated seat of the Earls of Eglinton, it is found only south of the town of Kilwinning. it was second just to Culzean Castle in appearance and greatness. The establishment stone of the new Eglinton Castle in Kilwinning was laid in 1797, the twelfth Earl of Eglinton, was pleased to have the service performed by Alexander Hamilton of Grange, granddad of the American Hero Alexander Hamilton.
Eglinton was the most outstanding post-Adam Georgian château in Ayrshire. Among numerous things of intrigue, the palace contained a seat worked from the oak timbers of Alloway kirk and the back of the seat was decorated with a metal plaque which bore the entire of Burns' sonnet Tam o' Shanter.
