About Cankiri
Cankiri is the capital city of Cankiri Province, in Turkey, about 140 km or 87 mi northeast of Ankara. Cankiri was referred to in classical times as Gangra, and later Germanicopolis. The city has additionally been known as Changra, Kandari or Kanghari. Α town of Paphlagonia that seems to have been at one time the capital of Paphlagonia and an August habitation, for it is known from Strabo that Deiotarus Philadelphus the last lord of Paphlagonia, lived there. Despite this, Strabo depicts it as just "a residential community and an army".
According to 1st century BC author Alexander the Polyhistor the town was worked by a goat herder who had discovered one of his goats straying there; however this starting point is most likely a negligible philological hypothesis as gangra means "a goat" in the Paphlagonian dialect. Gangra, was ingested into the Roman territory of Galatia upon the demise of Deiotarus in 6/5 BC. The prior town was based on the slope behind the advanced city, on which are the remains of a late post, while the Roman city possessed the site of the cutting edge city.
