3. Hirakud Dam

-One of the longest earthen dam (26 kms) in the world is built across the Mahanadi River, Orissa.
-Located about 15 km from Sambalpur in Orissa.
-Inaugurated by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on 13 January 1957.
-It is a composite structure of earth, concrete and stone.
-Hirakud Reservoir is 55 km long.
-First multi-purpose river valley projects started after India's independence, the major motive being to control flood, irrigation and power generation.
-Dam has height of 60.96 m (200 ft) with length of 25.8 km (16 mi).
-Power Generation - 347.5 megawatts of hydroelectricity.

4. NagarjunaSagar Dam

-It is the world's largest masonry dam.
-Built on the Krishna River at Nagarjuna Sagar, straddling the borders of Nalgonda and Guntur districts.
-One of the earliest multi-purpose irrigation and hydro-electric projects in India.
-The dam was constructed in 1967 with 490 feet (150 m) tall and 0.99 miles (1.6 km) long with 26 gates.
-Dam has power generation capacity of 815.6 MW with 8 units.
-It has water reservoir capacity of 11,472,000,000 cubic metres.
-Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is certainly the pride of India-considered the largest man-made lake in the world.

5. Sardar Sarovar Dam

-It is second largest concrete gravity dam (by volume) on the Narmada River near Navagam in Gujarat.
-Dam has the world's third largest spillway discharging capacity.
-The dam is meant to benefit the 4 major states of India Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.
-It's the part of series of large irrigation and hydroelectric multi-purpose dams on the Narmada River.
-Capacity of the power facilities is 1,450 MW with height of 138.68 m (455 ft).
-Indian government has approved the proposal to raise the dam's height from 121.9 metres to 138.7 metres, making it the second highest dam in the world after Grand Coulee in the US.

6. Indirasagar Dam

-Largest reservoir in India with capacity of 12.22 billion cu m.
-Built on Narmada River in 2005, with 92 m high and 653 m long concrete gravity dam.
-Located in Mundi in Khandwa district in Western Madhya Pradesh.
-It's a multipurpose project, built as a joint venture between Madhya Pradesh irrigation and National Hydroelectric Power Corporation.
-It provides Irrigation in 1,230 square kilometres of land with annual production of 2.7 billion units.
-Power Generation - 1000 megawatts of hydroelectricity.
-Nearest Airport is Khandwa at 30 Kms. and connecting Railway stations are on few Kms away.

7. Bhavanisagar Dam

-Second largest dam in Tamil Nadu and also known as the Bhavani Dam.
-Located on the Bhavani River in Erode district, Tamil Nadu.
-First major irrigation project initiated in India after independence in 1947 and was completed by 1956.
-Dam feeds the Lower Bhavani Project Canal.
-It has hight of 32 m (105 ft) with Capacity of 32.8 tmc of reservoir.

-Largest earthen dam in India and the second largest in Asia, built on Kabini River.
