In this hotel, guests pay money to be treated as prison inmates. Karosta Prison Hotel used to be a Nazi and Soviet military prison for most of the 20th century. During World War II, the Nazis sentenced Latvian to death, and executed them in the yard of this Prison cum-hotel.
Karosta Prison is one of Latvia's most unique tourist attractions. Visitors can take tours of the old prison facility and learn the gruesome history of this place, visit the prison museum and even book a stay in one of the old cells.
The hotel is located in the city of Liepaja and is strictly not for weak hearted as guests are physically threatened and verbally insulted like prisoners. Guests need to sign an agreement with the hotel for allowing them to be treated like prisoners.
Living conditions of guest include sleeping on a threadbare mattress spread on a wooden plank, eating prison food served through the barred doors, getting verbally abused by the guards and following orders to the letter. Failure to comply to the strict code of conduct is punished through physical exercise and cleaning work around the prison.
On top of this, guides continuously talk about paranormal activities that occur within the premises like light bulbs screwing out of their sockets, cell doors opening by themselves, and the sound of chains echoing from the halls.
The Karosta Prison Hotel opens every year, from May 1st to October 30th. For out of season tours, visitors have to call in advance.
Guests can enjoy the prisoner experience in Communist-era conditions - including death threats, warning gunfire and cries of despair from fellow inmates - for just $16 a night.
The hotel management insists on booking beforehand. They prefer group bookings. There are various offers by the hotel management for guided tours or be a prisoner for a few hours. If a person is scared then he can also watch what others are getting, by becoming prisoners.
