Just before the Ardh Kumbh Mela 2019, Yogi’s cabinet announced to rename Allahabad as Prayagraj and from today onwards Allahabad will be called as Prayagraj. The word Prayag means the confluence of two or more rivers, which according to the Yogi Adityanath, perfectly denotes the city.
Earlier this month Chief minister Adityanath had announced regarding the name change of Allahabad to Prayagraj in the gathering of Sadhus and now it has been implemented.
Allahabad, the name was given by the Mughal emperor Akbar in 1575 known to be an abode of god, whereas Prayag was the original name of Allahabad and bringing it back will revive the beauty and give it a true essence.
Not just that, the initiative to cultivate the Indian culture in India, the process of changing name has been going on since last year and CM Yogi Adityanath has renamed many other places too, such as, Ali Nagar to Arya Nagar, Urdu Bazar to Hindi Bazaar, Humayun Nagar to Hanuman and Nagar Mian Bazaar to Maya Bazar, in Gorakhpur.
The UP government also renamed another historic spot Mughalsarai Railway station to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya junction.
Although there have been a lot of criticism by the opposition party stating “BJP must learn to differentiate between ‘naam aur kaam name and work’. When will BJP end the politics of name change?.’’
As according to them changing name will diminish the historical importance and will also raise questions on implementing changes at prominent places like stations and University in the city.
