It was built with the aid of order of King Munmu in 674 CE. The pond is situated at the northeast fringe of the Banwolseong palace web site, in vital Gyeongju. It is an oval form; 200m from east to west and 180m from north to south. It contains 3 small islands. Anapji changed into in the beginning placed close to the palace of Silla known as Banwolseong.

It is written in Samguk Sagi: "During the technology of King Munmu, a new pond was made within the palace and vegetation and birds flourished on this pond". There is also mention of a royal reception held via King Gyeongsun in 931, whilst Silla become already crumbling. After the fall of Silla, the pond fell into disrepair for many centuries.
