About Sanandrei
Sanandrei is a commune in Timis County, Banat, Romania. It is composed of three villages: Carani, Covaci and Sanandrei. In 1930, Sanandrei was 79.6% German. By 2011, it became 94.62% Romanian, 1.81% Hungarian and 1.4% German. Carani was built in 1735 with the aid of Italian colonists introduced by means of the Habsburg Monarchy as a part of a huge effort to populate the Banat with Western Europeans.
It turned into one of the first villages for colonists, founded and inhabited completely by way of Italians, being the most effective majority-Italian agreement inside the whole Banat. The population grew silkworms, having been delivered there with a purpose to start silkworm production in the Banat. The village was founded below the name of Mercydorf, in honour of General Claudius Florimund Mercy, who turned into charged with administering the Banat. Later, new waves of colonists arrived – French human beings and Germans from Alsace-Lorraine. The first got here around 1752, then in 1763, in order that with the aid of 1770, the village became considerably French in individual. Religious offerings have been held in three languages: Italian, French and German.
