About Belm Tower Lisbon

Built in the earlier part of 16th century, Belm Tower took birth as a ceremonial gateway to the capital city Lisbon. An exemplary work in Portuguese late Gothic style, the Belm Tower was d a world heritage site by UNESCO along with the nearby Jernimos Monastery. One can see the Moorish decorations on the beautiful carved windows, balconies and in the cupolas of the watch tower. Earlier it was situated on a small island off the banks of River Tagus. But with subsequent expansion of shores to the south, the Tower has almost touched the shores. The Manueline style too is evident in the intricately carved motifs and sculptures both inside and on the outside of Belm Tower.
