About Cathedral Basilica of Lima

The Basilica Cathedral of Lima is a Roman Catholic church building situated in the Plaza Mayor of downtown Lima, Peru. Development started in 1535, and the building has experienced numerous reproductions and changes since. It holds its pioneer structure and exterior. It is devoted to St John, Apostle and Evangelist. With regards to the dominant part of church buildings the front veneer has three huge entryways. The fundamental or focal entryway is known as the Portada del Perdón or the "entryway of absolution".

Over the entryway is the Peruvian seal and the expression "In addition to Ultra" as opposed to Lima's crest. The two high towers with tower of slate, are neoclassical with elaborate impacts of the school "El Escorial" and of northern Europe. There are 14 side houses of prayer, one of which opens on to Calle de Judios (Street of the Jews) and another on to the Patio de los Naranjos (Square of the Orange Trees, associated with the Cathedral). At the back are two more passageways: Santa Apolonia and San Cristobal.

Set on the front veneer are models of the Apostles and in the center, the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Connecting the Cathedral are the Parroquia del Sagrario (one of the most established ones in Lima) and the Archbishop's Palace. Inside, at the edge walkways, are a grouping of huge canvases of the Via Crucis, "Method for the Cross." Pope John Paul II went to this church building on two events, in 1985 and 1988. This is honored with signs at the passageway.
