About Sverd i fjell

Sverd i fjell is a commemorative monument located in the Hafrsfjord community of Madla, a borough of the city of Stavanger in Rogaland, Norway. The monument became created by way of sculptor Fritz Roed from Bryne and became unveiled through King Olav V of Norway in 1983. The three bronze swords stand 10 metres 33 feet tall and are planted into the rock of a small hill next to the fjord. They commemorate the ancient Battle of Hafrsfjord which through tradition passed off there in the 1 year 872, when King Harald Fairhair collected all of Norway underneath one crown.

The biggest sword represents the effective Harald, and the 2 smaller swords constitute the defeated petty kings. The monument additionally represents peace, for the reason that swords are planted into strong rock, so they may never be eliminated. The monument became featured in the 2005 documentary, Metal: A Head banger’s Journey, whilst Sam Dunn traveled to Norway to file on Norwegian black metallic.
