Tannerie chouwara

The coloring vats at Chouara—and also at the city's different tanneries—are among the Fes medina's most famous sights. The antiquated art of tanning and coloring, in all its instinctive genuineness, plays out much as it generally has. Chouara has been around since the eleventh century.

The colors utilized as a part of the tannery pits are characteristic: Blue originates from indigo; red, from poppy or paprika; yellow, from saffron, pomegranate, or even a blend of turmeric and mimosa blossoms. The best vantage point for perception is from one of the rooftop patios. Cowhide shops peddling everything from margarine delicate calfskin babouches and poufs, to duplicates of originator coats and totes.
