About Cape Spartel

Cape Spartel is a promontory in Morocco about 1,000 feet 300 m above sea level at the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, 12 km West of Tangier. Beneath the cape are the Caves of Hercules. Amid the American War of Independence on 20 October 1782 there was an uncertain fight amongst British and French/Spanish armadas around 18 miles off the drift, the Battle of Cape Spartel between ships under Admiral Luis de Cordova y Cordova and a British armada under Admiral Richard Howe. The fight was required to keep up British supplies to the assaulted Rock of Gibraltar. In December 1911, the British P&O liner, SS Delhi, steered into the rocks close to Cape Spartel.

All travelers were protected by British and French warships, however three French rescuers were lost. The Battle of Cape Espartel was a maritime fight on 29 September 1936 amid the Spanish Civil War. The commitment occurred between two Nationalist cruisers and two Republican destroyers, and broke the Republican bar of the Strait of Gibraltar, anchoring the maritime supply course to Spanish Morocco for the Nationalists right off the bat in the war. Cape Spartel is much of the time however mistakenly alluded to as the northernmost purpose of Africa, which is rather Ras ben Sakka, Tunisia.
