About Daianji Temple

Daianji is one of the most established sanctuaries in Japan. The roots date to the start of the seventh century when Prince Shotoku set up a cloister called Kumagori-Shoja as a focal point of supplication for the all inclusive peace and the well living of the general population. On his passing bed, he communicated his desire to the Emperor Jomei that the religious community be created into an across the nation extraordinary sanctuary.

As per the desire, he set up Kudarano-Otera, the principal legislative sanctuary in Japan. From that point onward, it was moved into the capital city of Fujiwara-kyo, with the new name of Takechino-Otera. The sanctuary, renamed again Daikan-Daiji, succeeded as the focal sanctuary of Japan amid the Asuka period 592-710.

Following on the exchange of the cash-flow to the recently created city of Heijo-kyo in 710, the sanctuary was moved again to the present location?it compares to a square in the southeastern quarter of Heijo-kyo?and turned out to be exactly what we call Daianji today.

It is said that, in the Nara time frame 710-794, Daianji used to show the presence of the transcendent instruction and research organization for Buddhism as the country's vital sanctuary with 887 academic monks?not a little part of them were guests from the Asian mainland, among which there were such recognized figures as Bodai Senna India, Dosen China and Buttetsu Vietnam.
