At a separation of 14 km from Dwarahat, 48 km from Ranikhet, and 78 km from Almora, Dunagiri Temple or Doonagiri Temple is the most popular temple arranged at Dunagiri in Almora locale of Uttarakhand. The temple is devoted to Goddess Durga as Goddess Vaishnavi Devi and is situated on a little hillock of Kumaon Hills.
As per the legend, when Hanuman was conveying the stone weighed down with Sanjiwani to save Laxman harmed in the clash of Ramayana, a bit of the slope fell here. This episode gave this place its name Doonagiri. The temple is prevalently known as Mangalikhan among local people. The Temple is one of the two Vaishnavi Shakti Peeths in India other one being Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu Kashmir.
It is trusted that the bronze plate inside the temple goes back to 1181 AD. Thought to be one of the intense Shakti Peeths, the temple offers an all encompassing perspective of the Gogas Valley. Guests need to climb a stairway of 500 stages to achieve the temple.
