About Aurangabad Caves

The Aurangabad caves are twelve rock-cut Buddhist shrines placed on a hill walking kind of east to west in Aurangabad. The first connection with the Aurangabad Caves is within the exceptional chaitya of Kanheri Caves. The Aurangabad Caves were dug out of relatively smooth basalt rock at some point of the 6th and 7th century. The carvings at the Aurangabad Caves are exceptional for along with Hinayana fashion stupa, Mahayana artwork and Vajrayana goddess.

These caves are amongst the ones in India that show 1st millennium CE Buddhist art work with goddesses including Durga, and gods inclusive of Ganesha, even though Buddhist caves in different components of India with those arts are older. Numerous Buddhist deities of the Tantra subculture are also carved in those caves. The Aurangabad caves quite had been overshadowed by means of the UNESCO World Heritage monuments of Ellora and Ajanta cave temples. Though its sculptures are similar to Ajanta and Ellora, the caves are a lot smaller, more decrepit and much less visited.
