About Gottorf Castle

Gottorf Castle is a palace and bequest in the city of Schleswig, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is a standout amongst the most significant mainstream structures in Schleswig-Holstein, and has been modified and extended a few times in its more than 800 years of history, transforming from a medieval palace to a Renaissance stronghold to a Baroque mansion. It is the hereditary home of the Holstein-Gottorp part of the House of Oldenburg, from which developed in the 18th century, in addition to other things, four Swedish rulers and a few Russian Tsars.

It is arranged on an island in the Schlei, around 40 km from the Baltic Sea. It was first settled as a home in 1161 as the habitation of Bishop Occo of Schleswig when his previous living arrangement was obliterated. The Danish Duke of Schleswig obtained it through a buy in 1268, and in 1340 it was exchanged to the Count of Holstein at Rendsburg of the House of Schauenburg.

The estate later, through maternal legacy, turned into the ownership of Christian I of Denmark, the main Danish ruler from the House of Oldenburg, in 1459. Since 1947, the royal residence has been redesigned and reestablished through a progression of endeavors. The reclamation was viewed as complete in 1996. The royal residence is presently possessed by an establishment of the State of Schleswig-Holstein and houses the State Art and Cultural History Museum and the State Archeological Museum.
