About Carre d Art

The Carree d'art at Nimes in southern France homes a museum of modern-day artwork and the town's municipal library. Constructed of glass, concrete and metallic, it faces the Maison Carree, a superbly preserved Roman temple that dates from the 1st century BC. In 1984, twelve architects, inclusive of Frank Gehry, Jean Nouvel and Cesar Pelli, have been invited to publish proposals for the museum. A layout with the aid of the British architect Norman Foster became decided on, and the building become opened in May 1993.

The building was constructed as a part of a assignment to refurbish the square wherein the Maison Carree stands, and provide a new putting for the historical temple. The constructing is a 9-storey shape, half of of that's sunk deep into the ground, maintaining the constructing's profile low in sympathy with the dimensions of the encircling buildings. The decrease levels house archive storage and a cinema.
