About Virunga National Park

The Virunga National Park French: Parc National des Virunga, in the past named Albert National Park, is a 7,800 km2 3,000 sq mi National Park that stretches from the Virunga Mountains in the south to the Rwenzori Mountains in the north, in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, circumscribing Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Rwenzori Mountains National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda.

The recreation centre was set up in 1925 as Africa's first national stop and has been an UNESCO-assigned World Heritage Site since 1979. As of late, poaching and the Congo Civil War have genuinely harmed its untamed life populace. The recreation centre is overseen by the Congolese National Park Authorities; the Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature ICCN, and its accomplice, the Virunga Foundation, previously known as the Africa Conservation Fund UK.

The present park executive, since 2008, is the Belgian Prince Emmanuel de Merode. The recreation centre is known for its extraordinary biodiversity, containing more winged animal, well evolved creature and reptile species than any ensured territory on the mainland of Africa. In spite of the fact that mountain gorillas are presently amazingly uncommon and recorded as a standout amongst the most basically imperilled species, fruitful preservation work has anchored the rest of the populaces.
