About New Haven Museum & Historical Society

Three hundred and seventy-five years of history wake up at the New Haven Museum. From the settlement's establishing as a puritan town through its development into a noteworthy modern focus and now a flourishing metropolitan zone, New Haven's history is enlivened for our guests, rousing a rich valuation for the City's past, present, and future.

In 1638, English Puritans set up the New Haven Colony, which soon included what are currently the towns of New Haven, Branford, Guilford, Milford, and Stamford, and Southold on Long Island. The pilgrims arranged their town around a lattice of nine squares focused on the Meeting House on the Green, a particular geographic component of the city today.
