About Whinfell Forest

Whinfell Forest is now a small region of wooded area within the parish of Brougham, Cumbria, south east of Penrith in Cumbria and simply off the A66 avenue leading to Appleby-in-Westmorland. The forest is a short distance from the Lake District national park and is surrounded by a massive quantity of woodlands west of the Pennines. It is fantastic nowadays for the presence of Center Parcs and a purple squirrel reserve. It was wonderful traditionally for its institutions with Lady Anne Clifford, Brougham Castle and Inglewood Forest.

Whinfell Forest has existed on the grounds that at least 1203 whilst it "fashioned part of King John's furnish of the Barony of Westmorland to Robert de Veteripont". In 1283 it become divided among Isabella and Idonea, daughters of Robert II de Vieuxpont. It is often noted within the diaries of Lady Anne Clifford as she travelled in the area travelling Brougham Castle and Appleby-in-Westmorland. Whinfell Park become at the middle of the wooded area. Its proximity to Inglewood Forest supposed that it changed into stated in courtroom documents referring to disputes between the 2 areas.

The park contained regularly noted landmark trees: the Harthorn Tree and the Three Brother Tree. The Harthorn Tree had a hart's horn embedded in it.
