Laceby

Laceby is a town and common area in North East Lincolnshire, England. It is arranged on the A46 street, simply outside the western limit of Grimsby. Laceby's populace at the 2001 Census was 2,886, expanding to 3,259 at the 2011 Census. The town is noted for its ward church, parts of which date to the twelfth century. A Mesolithic stone working site, toward the north-east of the town, found in 1958, included models of Neolithic leaf molded arrowheads."While a 'findspot of conceivable Anglo-Saxon earthenware' was found in Coopers Lane in 1969. Nearby Welbeck Hill is the site of Roman ceramics finds, and an Anglo Saxon graveyard.

As indicated by A Dictionary of British Place Names, Laceby could get from "a farmstead or town of a man called Leifr", 'Leifr' being an Old Scandinavian individual name, and 'by', a farmstead, town or settlement. Laceby is recorded in the 1086 Domesday account as "Lenesbi" or "Levesbi", in the Bradley Hundred of the North Riding of Lindsey. The town contained 33 family units, 4 villagers, 5 smallholders, 85 freemen and 3 ministers. It involved 16 ploughlands, a knoll of 360 sections of land, forest of 100 sections of land, and 2 plants. The three Lords in 1066 were Erik, Tosti and Swein. In 1086 the land was passed to Bishop Odo of Bayeux, as Lord of the Manor and Tenant-in-boss.
