About Nuenen
Nuenen is a city inside the municipality of Nuenen, Gerwen en Nederwetten inside the Netherlands. From 1883 to 1885, Vincent van Gogh lived and labored in Nuenen. In 1944, the city was a conflict scene at some point of Operation Market Garden. The nearby dialect is called Peellands. In 2009, Nuenen had a populace of twenty-two,437. Nuenen is indexed within the 1792 Gazetteer of the Netherlands, which lists it as "a village of Brabant, two leagues W. From Helmont".
During Operation Market Garden on September 20, 1944, Nuenen become the scene of a battle involving the American 506th PIR of the a hundred and first Airborne Division and the British 15th/19th The King's Royal Hussars of the 11th Armoured Division ready with Cromwell tanks, against the German 107th Panzer Brigade. The British lost tanks, and four American and 3 British squaddies had been killed. The Germans suffered fatalities. The fight is dramatised in episode four "Replacements" of the tv series Band of Brothers.
