About Payagyi

The large Payagyi stupa and its larger than usual chinthe half-lion/half-monster god confront a sudden twin-crested slope, finished with a stupa and palace like rough outcrop, and said to have a permanent impression of Bagan-time King Kyanzittha at its base. Presently boxed inside solid dividers and a tin rooftop, the unfilled front supplication corridor holds its 170-year-old teak pillars. Its cut stone floor tiles, revealing to Ramayana stories, have been moved for protection to a historical center shed: see number 274 including Hanuman the monkey god riding a sheep and smoking a cheroot. The alluring wooden religious community building appears to be larger than average for the bunch of occupant priests.
It's 18 miles from the focal intersection in Budalin set apart by a brilliant horseback Bandula statue, 1640ft north of the Twin Daung turning, where you veer left. Keep left again after 2 miles at that point proceed with 14 miles to Ta Kook Ta Nel. Turn directly after the little line of teahouses at that point take after the track 3 miles to Payagyi. It's far to seek one religious community, however the provincial scenes on the way are exceptionally appealing. The initial six asphalted miles after Budalin go through cotton fields, sunflowers and Palmyra palms to Nyaung Kai/Ywathar, which has a huge Shwezigon pagoda in a field at its southeast edge.
