About Cairo Montenotte
Cairo Montenotte is a comune in the Province of Savona within the Italian place Liguria, located approximately 50 kilometres west of Genoa and about 20 kilometres northwest of Savona. Located in Val Bormida, it's miles a member of the Comunita Montana Alta Val Bormida. It is famous because the birthplace of the patriot Giuseppe Cesare Abba. Cairo Montenotte borders the following municipalities: Albisola Superiore, Altare, Carcare, Cengio, Cosseria, Dego, Giusvalla, Gottasecca, Pontinvrea, Saliceto, and Savona. The call "Cairo" comes from the Latin "carium", which itself comes from the Ligurian stem "kar", that means "stone", "rock". This vicinity, in keeping with many archaeological reveals, has been inhabited since the Neolithic age.
During the Roman Domination, Cairo became a stage on the Via Aemilia Scauri and through Iulia Augusta guy roads. According to the lifestyle, Francis of Assisi passed here in 1213, in the course of his trip to Spain; at some point of his adventure, he built the convent close to Cairo, inside the village of "Ville". In the 16th century there were a few battles between Germany and France near Cairo. In 1796 close to Montenotte Napoleon Bonaparte received his first struggle inside the Italian campaigns, the Battle of Montenotte.
