Church of the Birth of Our Lady

The principal Roman Catholic church in Surabaya was situated at what is currently the side of Jalan Kepanjen and Jalan Kebonrojo. Prior to the development of this congregation, Father Hendricus Waanders and Father Philippus Wedding was sent from the Netherlands as the minister for the Indies; at first Waanders was positioned in Batavia while Wedding was positioned in Surabaya, after that Waanders was positioned in Surabaya while Wedding changed place to Batavia.

Under Waanders, the Roman Catholic assembly in Surabaya developed impressively, bringing about another arrangement to develop a bigger church building. In 1822, the assembly could develop another congregation building situated in what is presently the side of Roomsche Kerkstraat
