Bird lovers are fond of watching these flying creatures in their natural habitat. So, for them there cannot be a better option than Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary near Srirangapatna, in Karnataka state. It is an exceptional procreation place for enormous species of local as well as migratory birds. Probably, the geographical location of the sanctuary is the only reason behind the arrival of numerous species of birds from far-off places like North America and Siberia. The entire bird sanctuary basically comprises of six islets all of which are sited on the banks of River Kaveri. The location of the sanctuary portrays a picturesque landscape and attracts ample number of visitors every year. From different parts of the country bird lovers assemble here to spot the activities of ious species of birds arriving here from all across the world. The enchanting landscape of the surrounding areas makes it an ideal destination to arrange family picnics as both adults and kids would like the place equally for the amazing environment the site offers. It is around 18km from Mysore and covers an area of 0.67sq km. Though the sanctuary is not very large but it is known all over the country for housing the best iety of birds and a few reptiles. From June to November is known to be the nesting season of the birds, so visiting the spot during this period can be a must to see destination. The sanctuary is home to an extensive species of birds including cormorants, spoon billed storks, white ibis, darters, painted storks, open billed storks, egrets, herons, white necked storks, swallows, terns, sandpiper, kingfishers etc. There are quite a few mammals in the sanctuary such as common otters, bonnet macaques, fruit bats, palm civets, and common mongoose. The sanctuary also houses wonderful species of marsh crocodiles. The sight of crocodiles, fruit bats, and birds flying in the surrounding areas is a stunning view to witness. To get a closer look at the birds and the crocodiles the visitors can take a boat ride around the sanctuary. The entrance to the park is enriched by the presence of vast bamboo surrounding through the winding path. Both the sides of the path towards the sanctuary contain boards with pictures and information about the ious species of birds that are available in the sanctuary. For serving quality food to the visitors, a small canteen is there inside the sanctuary near the lake.
