About Christ the King Cathedral

Landakotskirkja, officially Basilika Krists konungs The Basilica of Christ the King is the cathedral of the Catholic Church in Iceland. Often called Kristskirkja, Landakotskirkja is in the western part of Reykjavík, Iceland's capital city. The first Catholic monks to arrive in Iceland after the Reformation have been the Frenchmen Bernard Bernard and Jean-Baptiste Baudoin.

They sold the Landakot farmstead in Reykjavík and settled there inside the early 19th century. They built a small chapel in 1864. A few years later, a small timber church was erected by using Tungata, near Landakot. After the First World War, Icelandic Catholics noticed the need to build a larger church for the growing quantity of Catholics. They determined to build a Neo-Gothic church and entrusted the mission to the architect Gudjon Samuelsson. After years of production, Landakotskirkja become subsequently sanctified on 23 July 1929. It was the biggest church in Iceland at the time. Today, Landakotskirkja is a distinct landmark in western Reykjavík. The simplest Catholic school in Iceland became placed nearby at the identical land.
