About Wittingen
Wittingen is a town in the district of Gifhorn, Lower Saxony, Germany. It is around 30 kilometers upper east of Gifhorn, and 30 kilometers southeast of Uelzen. The most punctual distinguished record of Wittingen shows up in an archive dated 781 which characterizes the regional fringes of the Bishopric of Hildesheim. Another early notice dates from 803 amid the rule of Charlemagne, this time recognizing the fringes of the recently settled Bishopric of Halberstadt. Neither of these sources binds a date for the establishment of Wittingen, in any case.
Amid the Medieval time frame Wittingen was not only a boondocks point, yet in addition a concentration for traffic crossing into and out of the Altmark. The town was an exchanging point and a medium-term stop for east-west trade. Its criticalness was motioned in the 9th century when The Bishopric had the Church of St Stephen constructed. By the start of the 13th century Wittingen had been allowed Town benefits, and was a section proprietor of the Luneburg Mint. The 14th century was a time of political shakiness in this piece of Europe and in 1340 responsibility for was exchanged to the Welfs of Celle.
