About St. Augustine's Monastery

St. Augustine's Monastery in Erfurt in important Germany is a former church and monastery complex courting from the 13th century. The site is almost one hectare in size. It became constructed by means of Augustinian priests, an order of the Catholic Church. It is most well referred to as the former domestic of Martin Luther 1483-1546, the daddy of the Reformation, who lived there as a monk from 1505 till 1511. About seventy four ordained and 70 lay clergymen lived at the monastery at its top in the early sixteenth century. After the Reformation, from 1525 the monastery church turned into used by the neighborhood Lutheran congregation. The site have become the assets of Erfurt metropolis council after the last monk died in 1556.

It was secularized in 1559, however was later deconsecrated in 1854. It now belongs to the Evangelical Church in Central Germany. Augustinians had lived in Erfurt for the reason that 1266. After a few disputes with the metropolis, they have been temporarily expelled in 1273, however had been allowed to return permanently in 1276. The production of the church and monastery complex commenced in 1277, funded through donations given to the clergymen and the sale of indulgences.
