THIMPU - PUNAKHA 86 KMS / APPROX. 3 HOURS DRIVE We wake up to a gorgeous morning in Thimphu and ready ourselves for the journey to Punakha that takes us through Dochu La Pass at a height of approximately 3, 080 m. From here, we delight in the stunning views that include the Chorten, Mani Wall, and the fluttering prayer flags that adorn the highest point on the road. If we are lucky and the skies are clear, we may witness many a jaw-dropping sight with well-known Himalayan peaks in full view. These include Masagang 7, 158m, Tshendagang 6, 960m, Terigang 7, 060m, Jejegangphugang 7, 158m, Kangphugang 7, 170m, and Zongphugang 7, 060m. After lunch, we visit Punakha Dzong located near two rivers - Mo Chu female river and Pho Chu male river. Known to be one of the largest dzongs or fortresses/palaces in Bhutan, we access it by crossing a suspension bridge. Initially called Dechen Phodrang Palace of Great Happiness or Druk Pungthang, Punakha Dzong was the seat of the Bhutanese government for several years.
