Sera Monastery

Sera Monastery is one of the "considerable three" Gelug college religious communities of Tibet, found 1.25 miles north of Lhasa and around 5 km north of the Jokhang.

Situated at the foot of Tatipu Hill in the northern suburb of Lhasa City, Sera Monastery is one of three acclaimed cloisters in the city alongside the Drepung Monastery and the Ganden Monastery.

It is devoted to the Gelugpa or Yellow Hat Sect, a branch of Tibetan Buddhism, established by Tsong Khapa. Jamchen Chojey, one of Tsong Khapa's devotees assembled it in 1419 amid the Ming Dynasty 1368-1644.

The religious community was named Sera which implies wild rose in the Tibetan dialect, on the grounds that the slope behind it was canvassed with wild roses in blossom when it was assembled.

The religious community is glorious and covers a territory of 114,946 square meters 28 sections of land. Its fundamental structures are the Coqen Hall, Zhacang school and Kamcun quarters. Sacred texts written in gold powder, fine statues, aroma fabric and unparalleled wall paintings can be found in these corridors. Vivid verbal confrontations on Buddhist conventions are held here and these utilize a style unmistakable from those at Lhasa's different celebrated religious communities
