About Mount Keira

Mount Keira and mountain in the Illawarra locale of New South Wales, Australia. The suburb, a semi-rustic township of Wollongong, situated on the mountain's summit and southern flank, gets its name from the mountain, situated on the Illawarra slope, and is gotten from an Aboriginal word, Keira, signifying "extensive tidal pond or High Mountain". The natives called it Djera, which means wild turkey. The principal maps of the region called it Keera, later including the summit of Mount Keira has a rise of 464 meters 1,522 ft above ocean level that is found 4 kilometers 2.5 mi northwest of the city of Wollongong.

Its particular shape and vicinity to Wollongong make it a noteworthy neighborhood point of interest. It is noted for the perspectives of the city from the mainstream summit post and its history of coal mining. It was shaped as a component of the Illawarra slope crease in the vicinity of 80 and 60 million years back and the disintegration by rivers that resulted. Mount Keira shapes some portion of the Illawarra ledge which it joins by a high seat on the back western side.

It is topped by a westbound inclining level of moderately hard sandstone ringed on the rest of the 3 sides by precipices. From the bluff base the mountain slants down to the encompassing lower regions and waterfront plain. From Wollongong the mountain looks rather level topped; while from the north it shows up some portion of the ledge.
