About Westerham
Westerham is a city and civil parish in Kent, England, 5 miles west of Sevenoaks. It is recorded as early as the ninth century, and became cited within the Domesday Book in a Norman shape, Oistreham. Ham is Old English for a village or domicile, and so Westerham way a westerly home. The River Darent flows through the town, and previously powered three watermills. There is evidence that the place around Westerham has been settled for lots of years: reveals along with a Celtic fortification and a Roman avenue are nearby, together with the remains of a Roman encampment simply beyond the ruins of a tower south of the metropolis on the summit of Tower Woods.
The tower dates lower back to the 18th century, and became in the beginning constructed by way of the proprietors of Squerryes Court as a folly for his or her kid's amusement. In 1922 Winston Churchill MP purchased Chartwell Manor at the outskirts of Westerham, which, aside from the time he spent at 10 Downing Street, became his domestic for the rest of his existence. Chartwell is now administered by the National Trust.
