His child Archibald Douglas, fifth Earl of Angus was forced into surrendering the manor to the crown. The primary pinnacle house framing the focal point of the palace with four stories was worked by Andrew, second Lord Gray who was conceded the mansion in 1490. The palace saw military activity amid the 16th century War of the Rough Wooing. After the skirmish of Pinkie in September 1547 it was surrendered by buy to the English by its proprietor, Lord Gray of Foulis.

An errand person from the château, Rinyon Ninian Cockburn, who addressed the English incomparable administrator the Duke of Somerset before the stronghold was rendered was given a £4 compensate. The Scottish guardian, Henry Durham, was compensated with an English benefits, wage from the angling, and an import/send out permit. Durham later loaned the English authority £138. William Patten, the English essayist who went with Somerset, noticed the manor's vital significance; "it standeth in such sort at the mouth of the waterway Tay, that being gotten, both Dundee and St. John's Town Perth, and numerous different towns else will end up subject to this hold or be constrained to do without their utilization of the waterway".
