About Birkenhead Priory
Birkenhead Priory is in Priory Street, Birkenhead, Merseyside, England. It is the most established standing expanding on Merseyside. The stays of the cloister are recorded in the National Heritage List for England as an assigned Grade I recorded building and it is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The Priory was established around 1150 by Hamon de Masci, third Baron of Dunham Massey for the Benedictine Order. In 1318 the priests from Birkenhead Priory were allowed ship rights by Edward II. This enabled them to fabricate a house in what is presently Water Street to store their corn.
