1. Domestic Low-Cost Carriers Raised their Excess Baggage Fee
Domestic low-cost carriers Indigo, AirAsia India and GoAir have raised their excess baggage fee following a directive from the Central Government. Passengers travelling on these airlines will now be charged INR 300 a kg for carrying baggage in excess of 20-kg according to their websites. Earlier, these airlines were charging INR 250 per kg for the excess baggage. The action follows the Central Government’s directive to rationalize excess baggage.
Dr. Anurag Jain - Aviation Consultant said, “The hike is clearly a repercussion of the government’s regulation on excess baggage charges which should have been avoided in first place. And now, passengers carrying more than 20 kg bags will have to bear the burden of those carrying less than 20 kg. The airlines have been forced to cross subsidise due to the government’s regulation.”
The Federation of Indian Airlines, representing Indigo, AirAsia India, SpiceJet and GoAir, had recently moved the Delhi High Court challenging the Centre’s rule on five-kg excess baggage fee that came into effect from July 1, 2016 challenging the Centre’s rule on five-kg excess baggage fee that came into effect from July 1,2016.
