Koneswaram Kovil, situated on the most astounding purpose of Trincomalee at Swami Rock, is regularly said to be the essential Hindu sanctuary in Sri Lanka with sanctuaries on this site being specified in the old annals of Mahavamsa where it was alluded to as Gokarna.
While the stone has stood enduring since time started, this sanctuary, which began as a sanctum 2500 years prior, has not generally been so implanted in the scene as, in 1622 on the Tamil New Year's Day, the Portuguese assaulted and decimated it totally.
They at that point constructed a Fort and their own congregation on the site. Thus, today, to get to the reconstructed sanctuary, we needed to drive through the Fort.
