About Teylers Museum

Teylers Museum is a museum of science and art in the Dutch city of Haarlem. It was founded in 1778 as a book and a construction a public opportunity for art and science. Both the building and the museum interior have the status of national monument. The museum has the oldest Dutch museum room, the interior of which has been preserved almost in its original state. The museum is named after Pieter Teyler van der Hulst 1702 to 1778, a rich Haarlem cloth and silk manufacturer and banker.

As a supporter of the Enlightenment, Pieter Teyler was very interested in art and science. By testament he left his collection and assets to the Teylers Foundation, which, among other things, promoted art and science. In implementing the will, it was decided to found a center for knowledge and education behind Pieter Teyler's home. In Teylers Museum art and science objects books, physical instruments, drawings, fossils and minerals were brought together under one roof. This was a revolutionary initiative based on the ideals of the Enlightenment: a knowledge institute by and for citizens where people could discover the world without the force of Church or State.
