About Calcinato
Calcinato is an Italian town of 12,912 inhabitants in the province of Brescia in Lombardy. Calcinato arose on an ancient Roman road, as attested by the findings of epigraphs, one of which is dedicated to the god Apollo. In the early middle Ages, part of the territory was owned by the Benedictine Abbey of Nonantola who ceded it to the Monastery of Santa Giulia in 813. The Benedictines had the merit of starting the first land reclamation and canalization works. The abbey of Acquanegra also owned several assets. The Castle was placed on the hill and the moment of construction is ignored.
On 9 August 1201 it was the scene of the struggle between the Cremonese Ghibelline exiles and the Guelph from Brescia who saw the latter succumb. After the fall of the Brescian lordship of Pandolfo III Malatesta 1419, the fortress was occupied by Carmagnola under the command of forces loyal to the Visconti. An epigraph in the town hall building recalls the passage of the condottiero then made famous by Alessandro Manzoni.
