About Offas Dyke
Offa's Dyke is a big linear earthwork that type of follows the modern-day border among England and Wales. The shape is called after Offa, the Anglo-Saxon king of Mercia from AD 757 until 796, who is historically believed to have ordered its construction. Although its precise genuine motive is debated, it delineated the border among Anglian Mercia and the Welsh state of Powys. The dyke, which turn out to be as lots as 65 ft 20 m good sized at the side of its flanking ditch and 8 toes immoderate, traversed low floor, hills and rivers.
Today the earthwork is included as a scheduled monument. Some of its path is observed with the aid of the usage of the Offa's Dyke Path; a 283 km lengthy-distance footpath that runs amongst Liverpool Bay in the north and the Severn Estuary inside the south. Although the dyke is conventionally dated to the Early Middle Ages of Anglo-Saxon England, research in current a few years – the usage of techniques together with radioactive carbon relationship – has challenged the conventional historiography and theories about the earthwork.
