Cathedral of La Serena

The Our Lady of Mercy Cathedral additionally called La Serena Cathedral. It is the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of La Serena. It is the biggest sanctuary in the city, and one of the houses of God of Chile and is situated in the northeastern corner of the Plaza de Armas in La Serena, at the crossing point of Los Carrera road with the Cordovez road. In its grounds was the Old Parish Matrix-El Sagrario, which remains as the main sanctuary for the establishing of La Serena in 1549.

In 1741 depicted the Parish of the grid as a solitary development of a ship of 50 meters in length by 10 meters wide, it was 7 holy places inside and mid-ascent tower to one side. Its dividers was situated limestone section with stones in a blend of sand and lime .In 1840 the Parish of the Matrix is wrecked, and in 1844 the development of the present Cathedral started utilizing a large number of the old building materials, taking care of the French task engineer Juan Herbage by 1844.
