Templo Mayor: Mexico City

It appears in front of you when you least expect it. Just turn a corner and you will come face to face with one of the most important archaeological finds of the century. Templo Mayor is situated right in the heart of Mexico City in between a posh locality. Templo Mayor was one of the most important temple of the Aztec civilization. The excavation was carried out in phases revealing more and more of this architectural wonder. Inside the excavation site, there is a museum maintained, which displays artifacts and murals excavated from the site. There were originally two temples situated on the top of the pyramid. One was dedicated to Huitzilopochtli, god of war and the other to Tlaloc, god of rain. There were two sets of staircase to these temple, a section of which is visible.
