The Duruthu Perahera festival is a religious and cultural pageant that celebrates the visit of Lord Buddha to Colombo, Sri Lanka, about 2500 years ago. It is an yearly most elaborate fest with low display recalling the studded traditions of the country. Hence emerges as a memorable event.
The Duruthu Perahera festival (DPF) is a supportive event to rejoice in Sri Lanka’s cultural richness continuously for three days. The sacred Kelaniya Rajamaha Viharaya temple situated in the Western Province also celebrates DPF each January during the “Duruthu Poya” organizing a historic, traditional and cultural pageant, the “Ketani Perahera commemorating the 3rd visit of Lord Buddha.
To give event a larger-than-life image three colorful processions are featured along with the talented group of artistes comprising actors, drummers, caparisoned elephants and dances and singers. It really helps you to befriend themselves with the splendor and royalty of country’s cultural facets.
The Perahera starts at 8.00 pm in the night and would highlight the releasing of sacred casket, elephants then carry the casket and a divine insignia. However, the “Ketani Perahera brings to light all committed devotees dressed in white. Hence help you understand the magnificence of this pageant organized with an aim to immortalize traditional customs, rites and rituals.
