Also called the Cheri Monastery, Chagri Monastery was built in the year 1620 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the founder of Bhutanese state. The monastery is situated in the Thimphu Valley, just 15 km away from the main city center. It also acts as a trekking destination as you have to leave your car at Dodeyna and walk for one hour up the steep slope. The surroundings are splendid as usual which makes the trek least tiring. Chagri Monastery is also among the most beautiful monasteries in Bhutan. The monastery is under Drukpa Kagyu order and is a major learning center for them.
