About Thale Sap Lakes

TheSongkhla Lakeis known to be the largest naturallakeinThailand. It is popularly known as Thale Sap Lake. The lake is situated on theMalay Peninsulain the southern part of Thailand. The lake covers an area of 1,040 km. It borders the provinces of Phatthalung and Songkhla. It is better look like a lagoon complex. There are three distinct parts in this lake. The southern part of this lake opens by a 380 m broad passage to theGulf of Thailand, which is located at the city ofSongkhla. The water of this gulf area is bluish in colour. Water is quite salty here. The most striking feature of this lake is the 75km longspit. It separates the lake from the sea. There are different types of wetland available around the lake. The iety of wetland includes swamp forest, marsh, lake, swamp grasslands, Melaleuca, and paddy fields. Among the specific type of wetland paperbark is quite known. There are some of the islands in the Melaleuca swamp forest which remain free of water for most of the year. "Kuans" is one of them. Kuan Ki Sian is a hill situated at 02 meters above the average sea level. The hillock is located within the Thale Noi area. This area houses more than 5,000 families. Maximum residents of this area are dependent either on some resource extraction, or they use the land within the area. Many of them practice cultivation. Whereas fishing, cattle grazing, tourism, and mat-making also work as a source of earning. More than 200,000 foreign and local visitors visit the site annually.
Irrawaddy Dolphin
Irrawaddy Dolphin, which is an endangered species indeed, can be found here. A small population of this species is available in Thale Luang, near the Si-Ha Islands of Phatthalung. Due to the overfishing and pollution of the lake this species of Dolphin is already threatened to extinction.
