Established in 1981, the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery is a place where the turtles are breed and preserved from being totally extinct form Sri Lanka. Operated by the Wild Life Protection Society of Sri Lanka, this hatchery is doing a great job by protecting the turtles from fishing, pollution, habitat loss and hunting. Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery even pays the fishermen who collects the eggs from the beaches and brings it to them. The visitors can see the new born turtles in the containers and can even be a part of the process of releasing them in the sea. This organization has been undertaking many initiatives to protect the turtles from being accidentally killed by the fishing hooks. They have even distributed thousands of turtle friendly hooks to the fishermen to fulfill the purpose.
