About Veenendaal
Veenendaal is a municipality in the Dutch province of Utrecht, located at the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and the Gelderse Vallei. The municipality has 65,599 inhabitants and has an area of 19.Eighty one km². Veenendaal cooperates with the municipalities of Rhenen, Wageningen, Ede, Barneveld, Nijkerk, Scherpenzeel and Renswoude in the nearby FoodValley area. For a long time there has been a swampy peat location inside the Gelderse Vallei to the north of Rhenen, also called the Rhenense or Stichtse peat.
These originated at the cease of the ultimate ice age due to the poor drainage of the area. At the end of the Middle Ages, peat become increasingly more used as gasoline in preference to wooden. Just as in many different regions in the Netherlands, peat became also mined on this area. This happened from around 1430. For a smooth drainage of the peat, the Bishop Davidsgrift was built on the quit of the 15th century.
